Workout Tip: When You Overdid It with Exercise

Workout Tip: When You Overdid It with Exercise This is a time of year when many people decide to jump into a new exercise routine, or give the routine they had a kickstart. That can be great for your fitness level, but it can sometimes also result in trying to do too much too soon, which can backfire on you when you are forced to suffer the aftermath of an overly ambitious workout. We have all overdone it at the gym at least occasionally. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to help speed the recovery.

Soothe your sore muscles

Your worn-out muscles will really appreciate some TLC after a particularly demanding workout. Gentle massage can make a big difference in banishing the post-exercises aches and pains. Stretching (again, using a gentle approach) can help loosen up kinks and tension in the muscles. Heat and/or ice or a rotation of both can also help you achieve some relief from pain and soreness.

Choose the right post-recovery workout fuel

What you eat or drink after a workout can have an impact in how you feel, and how quickly you bounce back from strenuous activity. Choosing a fast-digesting protein can help replenish your energy supply quickly. Fish oil is a great post-workout recovery option. Foods that boost your immune system, such as yogurt or sweet potatoes, are also smart choices. Of course, you also want to be sure to rehydrate sufficiently, so be sure to drink plenty of water.

Give yourself a rest

If you have tried an assortment of other tactics and still aren’t quite feeling up to par, time may be the only thing that will truly get you back to your pre-workout condition. Get plenty of sleep and give yourself a chance to rest and take it easy for a short time until your body starts to feel better. Obviously, when you prepare for your next workout, you will want to do your best to prevent a repeat of this situation. So step up your exercise regimen gradually, and be sure to stretch before your workout to help prevent muscle soreness.
