Exercise Tips for Staying Active This Fall – During COVID-19

Exercise Tips for Staying Active This Fall - During COVID-19The last few months have been a bit crazy with COVID-19. Lockdowns, stay at home orders, business closures have affected everybody in some fashion. And, for a majority of that time, gyms have been either closed, or facing reduced schedules and equipment availability. We now have the running joke of gaining the “COVID 25”. With all the anxiety that the last few months have caused, exercise is a great way to reduce that stress, as well as those pounds you’ve put on. Here’s some exercise tips for staying active this fall during this ongoing COVID-19 crisis.

If you’ve enjoyed working out at your local gym, you’re probably let your exercise routine lapse a bit during this current crisis. And your motivation has most likely also suffered a bit as well. Exercise can boost your immune system, which may help you either avoid getting sick, or help you get over illness faster. Exercise also releases endorphins, which help you feel better. So the following tips and reminders are designed to assist you in getting your workouts going again – and the benefit is that if more people followed these tips, it may help us get past this crisis that much faster!

Get Outside
Not only is fresh air and sunshine great for your mental health, with fall temperatures starting to cool down here in the desert, it’s more comfortable outside as well. Check the latest guidelines for your specific area, and make sure you social distance while exercising outside. Go for a walk, start a short run, do some yard work. This can also help your motivation as well to get back into an exercise routine.

Track Your Workouts
Whether you use something like a FitBit or Apple Watch, or you write things down on paper, tracking your workouts can help you stay accountable as well as keep yourself motivated. Being able to see your progress improve over time is also important to see where elements of your workouts may be starting to plateau, so you can recognize when it’s time to change up your routine.

Work Extra Movement Into Your Day
Exercising during commercial breaks when watching your favorite shows, walking around when you’re on a video conference or phone call, or workout faster while doing household chores are ways that you can add extra movement – and burn extra calories – during your normal daily routine.

Take Advantage of YouTube
Many personal trainers during this COVID-19 crisis have uploaded their workouts onto YouTube. So, if you’ve been missing workout classes at your normal gym, or you’re not sure where to start with your workouts, check out some YouTube videos for some excellent workout ideas and plans!

Put Together a Home Gym
With past gym closures, the threats of new closures, and the risk of infection even if you go back to the gym, now may be the time to invest in equipment to take your workouts home. This gives you the advantage of being able to work out safely, when you want to workout, with equipment that you’ve chosen specifically for how you exercise.
