Tips for Exercising in Summer Heat

Tips for Exercising in Summer Heat

Summer is brutal here in Arizona. Yet, just because it’s hot out, doesn’t mean your workouts should end for the season. There’s so many activities to do outside, even when it’s hot out. But, you also need to exercise caution during the summer.

The biggest problem is staying hydrated. It’s vital that you keep drinking water, while also maintaining your body’s proper level of electrolytes and salt that are lost through sweat. Without hydration, electrolytes, and salt, you can feel light headed and nauseous.

If you’re feeling those symptoms, you need to stop exercising, get out of the heat and sun, and start drinking water, as well as replenish your electrolytes. Severe dehydration can result in some pretty bad health problems, including kidney failure (and in extreme cases – death!).

At the same time, you might not realize you can drink too much water. This is called hyponatremia, where you’ll feel confused nauseous, and also experience muscle cramps, seizures, and even death in extreme cases.

Tips for Exercising in Summer Heat:

  • Time of Day is Important – The coolest time of day is right before sunrise.
  • Choose Loose, Light Colored Clothing – Dark colors absorb more heat from the sun than light colors. And fabrics that wick sweat away from your skin can help keep you cool as well.
  • Use Sunscreen – Go with at least an SPF 45 to be safe. It’s important to protect your skin, even on cloudy days.
  • Stay Hydrated – Drink one to two glasses of water prior to going outside, and then take a drink every 10-15 minutes. Hydration packs are a great way to make sure you have enough water with you. And, make sure you take that drink, even if you’re not thirsty. If you’re thirsty, you’re probably already a bit dehydrated.
  • Stay In the Shade – If you’re cycling, running, or hiking, try to stay in shady areas where possible.
  • Take Your Workouts Indoors – Find a local gym, or invest in quality home fitness equipment, and keep your workouts going in the cool comfort of your home.

And, for the industry’s highest quality home fitness equipment selection, stop into any of Fitness 4 Home Superstore’s three Phoenix locations.
