Your treadmill workout – common mistakes you might be making!

Treadmill of the Month: True PS300With summer coming here to Phoenix, and hot temperatures making outdoor running difficult, it’s now time to move inside. Running on a treadmill is a perfect way to keep up on your cardio workouts, while avoiding the problems of heat, dehydration, and summer dust storms here in the Valley.

But, are you getting the most out of your workouts on your treadmill? Here’s some common mistakes that may be making!

1. You look at your feet. It’s best to look straight ahead – keep your spine straight, your shoulders level and your chest open. Looking at your feet can not only force you to loose your balance, it can also strain your neck and misalign the rest of your body. Additionally, keeping your posture correct opens up your lungs for more efficient breathing!

2. You’re wearing the wrong shoes. You’re indoors. No one can see you. So, make your footwear choice based on function, not fashion! Look for shoes with extra padding in the heals to protect your feet from the high impact of each foot strike.

3. You slap your feet. Your stride should be similar to how you walk or run on pavement. Try to land either midfoot or on the ball of your foot. Otherwise, you risk not only causing muscle strain in your hips and back, but you can loose your balance. And, slapping your feed wastes energy.

4. You lean forward. This is similar to looking at your feet. Stand up straight, look ahead, and open your chest up – not only will you breathe better, but you’ll decrease muscle strain on your back and neck!

5. You never vary your routine. Mix things up a bit. If you don’t, your body grows used to a routine, and your gains will plateau. Every once in awhile, try a stair stepper, get on an elliptical, or go for a run outside. Mixing up your routine also can help you avoid muscle strains from constant repetitive motion.
