Revitalize your cardio workouts with a Lateral Trainer!

Helix HLT2500 Lateral TrainerWorking out on a treadmill or elliptical trainer are some of the best ways to get a great cardio workout. But, what if you want to still get a great, total body workout that also emphasizes your legs? The fore/aft movement of running or working out on an treadmill or elliptical works the fronts and backs of your legs as well as your glutes. But have you considered a Lateral Trainer for your workouts?

Lateral trainers provide a low-impact, total body workout. If you have problems with your knees, this is a great type of cardio machine that is also high-aerobic, and is safe and gentle on your joints. But, unlike ellipticals or treadmills, lateral trainers also require that you balance a bit more, as the side abduction that your body & legs require to operate the lateral trainer, also pull in your core muscles and hip flexors. This effect works additional muscles that ellipticals and treadmills don’t activate during your workout. What this means for you is – not only are you increasing strength and flexibility in muscles that otherwise might not get reached during other types of cardio workouts, the more you work additional muscles, the more calories you burn!

The main muscle groups you’ll activate during a workout on a lateral trainer, are the core stabilizers of the hip, including the iliopsoas – these muscles start at the top of your hip, then crosses the front of it and inserts into the inside of your thigh.  You’ll also activate opposing muscles to the iliopsoas to stabilize the hip – these muscles are the gluteus medius and minimus.  These muscles can help you improve your overall balance.

Spinal flexion and extension will also occur – flexion involves the external and internal obliques, and the rectus abdominus – these are the “six-pack” muscles of your abs. Spinal Extension works muscles in your lower to middle back and upper back along your spine. This is good for strengthening your back after a long day of sitting.

And, yes, you also work your glutes. Also known as your “butt”. Plus, you work your quads (the front muscles in your leg), as well as your hamstrings. This is good for strengthening your leg and butt, while also toning and shaping them.

Sound good? You get a great, low impact workout, burn more fat, and shape your lower body and abs!
