2 minute walks every hour may reduce hazard of prolonged sitting
Recent studies are showing a link between prolonged sitting and poorer health that can reduce a persons life span. Now, a new study in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology is showing that just adding 2 minutes of walking per hour to a weekly routine of moderate exercise can make a difference!
Low-intensity activity, such as a 2 minute walk every hour, is far better than just standing – and can offset the effect of sitting for long periods. This is important to consider, as long periods of sitting are being linked to increased risks of premature death, heart disease, diabetes, and other health problems.
The American Heart Association has already been recommending that people engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise, or 75 minutes of rigorous exercise. But, 80% of America does not hit that minimum exercise amount. The question then became – what are more achievable goals that would still have a positive impact on health?
The research is now showing that 2 minute walks every hour – casual walking or light walking – was linked to a 33% lower risk of premature death! This means that even making small efforts can have a big impact.
There are still far greater benefits with engaging in a regular exercise program. But on those days that you just can’t find the time to get in your normal workout – make sure you at least get up every hour and to a light, 2 minute walk. It can make all the difference!
