A recent article in the Washington Post added additional fuel to the idea that we need to change our diet and exercise habits. We are a nation that eats too much, eats less healthy food, and doesn’t move around as much as we used to.
The article shows that, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, women now weigh on average of 166.2 pounds. That’s what the average male weighed in 1960. And men now weigh on average 195.5 pounds – 30 pounds more than what they did in 1960. The overall gain for women came in over that 55 year period of 18.5%, where men came in slightly less at 17.6%. Some of that gain comes from gaining roughly an inch in height during that time – but 1 inch of height should not increase our weight by more than 17%!
There’s an argument that this isn’t just a problem for the US – it’s a worldwide issue. But, we are now the third heaviest population – the only nations ahead of us are two small nations in the Pacific (Micronesia and Tonga). Think about how food portions have changed in the last 50+ years. We now supersize our meals. This isn’t happening in France (where we weigh an average of 33 pounds more than the average Frenchman), or Japan (40 pounds more), or Bangladesh (where we weigh an incredible 70 pounds more on average).
What’s the solution? Eating healthy, and less of it. And, getting up off the couch or desk, and becoming active again!
