Fitness Isn’t Just For Adults – Keeping Your Kids Fit

We have an obesity problem in this country. And, it’s not just adults – it’s our kids as well. Where we grew up in a time where we rode bikes, played outside, and were generally active, far too many kids these days prefer to spend their time in front of the TV, playing video games. And, as adult diets have changed, it’s also had an impact on what our kids are eating. Here’s some ways designed for keeping your kids fit!

Keep Them Moving! – Have your kids do some outdoor chores, such as cleaning up the yard, raking leaves, or other physcial activites that get them active. Walking, running, or biking to and from school are also great ways to add some activity to their day.

Healthy Snacks – Snacks are a great way to add some healthy choices to your kids diets. Make sure they have at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day – and snacks are a great way to get to that level. One serving of fruits could be an apple or a banana. One serving of vegetables could be 1/2 cup of raw, chopped vegetables or 1 cup of leafy green vegetables like spinach or kale.

Add Variety to their Activities – Try adding some mini-workouts to their down time. This could mean getting them to do a few push ups or sit ups between commercial breaks, or doing 30 minutes of running between doing homework and playing a video game. Try to integrate small workouts into their day so it feels less daunting and overwhelming.

Get Active With Them! – Getting your kids into a healthy lifestyle is far easier if you set a good example and exercise & enjoy a healthy diet with them. So, if you’re not in shape either, maybe you should start first – your experiences getting back in shape can be a great tool to help motivate them to join you
