What are the benefits of exercising with a stability ball?

Stability BallDid you know that one of the best products you can use for your workout is a stability ball? Also known as Swiss Balls, Balance Balls, or Physio Balls, this piece of stability equipment has been used for years in clinical rehabilitation.  More recently, trainers and coaches have started to integrate them into their training programs as well.

Surprisingly enough – In Europe, they have been used in schools as chairs! The benefits of this type of use has reported that children have improved focus, concentration, handwriting skills, better understanding of class material, and better organizational skills. And, there are several pilot studies in the US using the Stability Ball in schools and the preliminary data is consistent with that found in Europe.

Ball Selection
Choosing a stability exercise ball is simple. A properly sized exercise ball will allow you to sit on it with your knees and hip at 90 degrees. Using different size balls will allow you more flexibility and variation with your stability ball training.

Benefits of Stability Ball Training
Having your body properly aligned on the stability ball ,helps to stimulate the body’s natural motor reflexes. By having your body to react as a whole, integrated unit, your entire body is challenged to maintain correct posture and balance. When your body is forced to work to stay stabilized on the ball, you’re triggering both core muscles, as well as stabilizer muscles, helping to improve muscle strength and endurance. And, it also forces your body to become more flexible, while also improving your balance!

You’ll work muscles you never knew you had. And, as your subconscious mind is having to work to keep you stable, you’ll find that your more focused during your workout!

Finally – talk to a good personal trainer, ask at your gym, or look online for suggestions on Stability  Ball Workouts – and find a routine that meets your needs.
